40 Years, One Country Store, Generations of Customers

Marvin’s Country Store, a local Johnson landmark, marks four decades of serving the community.

Marvin’s Country Store, a family-owned Vermont country store with deep roots in the local community, is celebrating its 40th anniversary this month.

Since opening in 1986, Marvin’s Country Store has sold a variety of Butternut Mountain Farm maple products alongside Vermont specialties including cheese, honey, and jams as well as handmade crafts sourced from local artisans and sugar making supplies. For the Marvin family, the store is about more than what’s on shelves. For four decades, it has become a familiar stop for generations of residents, sugarmakers, and visitors discovering Vermont.

In 1986, David and Lucy Marvin transformed the space from what was once a former garage, schoolhouse, and blacksmith shop into Marvin’s Country Store. Forty years later, the building continues to welcome customers through its doors while retaining the character and warm feeling that has been a part of the store from the beginning.

“Reaching 40 years is really a celebration of the people who have supported Marvin’s Store along the way” said Emma Marvin, Owner and Co-CEO of Butternut Mountain Farm and daughter of store founders, David and Lucy Marvin. “My parents created a place where we could highlight the maple products we make and bottle, overtime it has become an anchor on the town’s main street and is rooted in this community. It’s incredibly meaningful to see it’s still going strong 40 years later. We’re grateful for the artisans, customers, neighbors and visitors that have all become a part of the store’s story.”

That sense of familiarity is something store manager, Kyley Hill, has seen firsthand during her more than 20-year tenure at Marvin’s Country Store.

“At a time when big box stores and online shopping are increasingly becoming the norm, people appreciate a family-owned retailer,” said Hill. “There’s comfort when you enter this space, it’s a bit like stepping back in time. And who doesn’t love maple syrup?”

Today, Marvin’s Country Store remains a place where everyone is welcome, and visitors can find Vermont-made products, discover the work of a local craftsman, and most importantly, experience a little piece of Vermont that has remained remarkably true to itself for 40 years.
