Donut French Toast with Maple Syrup

When the first green leaf assumes its fall form (a soft amber shade about to fall from a balding branch), we toss a scarf around our necks and venture on our way to grab a dozen apple cider donuts. It just ~feels right~. Something else that feels right? Turning those donuts into Apple Cider Donut French Toast.

We headed to Cold Hollow Cider Mill in Waterbury Center, Vermont for their legendary apple cider donuts. Trays of this aromatic treat greeted us at the register. We left with a dozen and a mission: turn these donuts into the most decadent French toast.

The ride home is the hardest part of this recipe. In the event that you have resisted devouring the entire haul before reaching your kitchen, let the donuts sit overnight. We know that’s yet another challenge, but it’s worth it. The next morning you’ll have a perfect canvas for French toast. Soak the cider-y crumb in a bath of eggs, milk, cinnamon and maple sugar for a supercharged fall delicacy.

Once toasted, drench your Apple Cider Donut French Toast in maple syrup for a final touch of the season’s richest flavors. Enjoy in your coziest flannel with a full glass of apple cider!

INGREDIENTS

  • 8 plain apple cider donuts, sliced in half
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons maple sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • Butter

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. In a shallow dish, whisk the eggs, milk, maple sugar, cinnamon and salt together.
  2. Soak the donuts crumb side down in the egg mixture for about a minute. You’ll most likely have to do this in batches.
  3. While the donuts soak, heat a non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Melt about 1/2 tablespoon of butter in the pan.
  4. Place the soaked donuts in the pan and cook until the face of the donuts are browned and toasted, about 3-4 minutes. Flip and cook the other side of the donut, about 2 minutes more. Adjust the heat as necessary per batch to avoid burning, adding a small bit of butter between batches to keep the skillet greased.
  5. Remove the donuts from the heat and serve with maple syrup.
