Fried Feta with Maple Balsamic Glaze

FRIED FETA WITH MAPLE BALSAMIC GLAZE

In Greece fried feta cheese is known as Saganaki. It’s typically fried in a shell of sesame seeds and finished with honey. Our version is a little more maple forward! Our maple sugar seasoning encrusted block of fried feta is drizzled with a tangy maple balsamic glaze, and will enrich all of your soirees this summer. Enjoy a sliver on a baguette or pita with in-season cherry tomatoes or devour it chopped over a bowl of fresh greens from the garden. It’s easy to whip up and even easier to devour!

INGREDIENTS

  • 8oz block of feta
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup panko
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Maple Sugar Seasoning, divided
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds (optional)
  • 1/4 cup olive oil

FOR THE MAPLE BALSAMIC GLAZE

  • 1 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Make the maple balsamic glaze. Stir the balsamic vinegar and maple syrup together in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, until reduced by half, about 12 minutes. Set aside and let cool in a small bowl.
  2. Pat the block of feta dry. Season the flour with 1/2 teaspoon of Maple Sugar Seasoning. Season the panko with the remaining teaspoon of the seasoning. Toss the sesame seeds into the panko, if using.
  3. Dredge the feta in the flour, then the egg and then the panko. The whole block should be breaded. Place the block on a plate and let it sit in the fridge for 30 minutes.
  4. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Once it’s shimmering (it will look like it’s glistening), carefully add the block of feta. Fry until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes. Flip and fry the other side for 3 minutes, until golden brown, lowering the heat if needed.
  5. Serve over green with tomatoes, chives and balsamic glaze!
