pure maple butter

Maple butter grilled cheeses aren’t commonplace on menus, but after cooking a few servings up we think they should be! The rich flavor of pure maple butter mingles with the sharpness of cheddar cheese, and this makes for a bite that’s as delightful as bites get. Think sweetness with an edge, plus the satisfying crunch of a toasted sandwich.

Pure maple butter is pure maple syrup stirred until a creamy consistency forms. The rich flavor profile remains while the texture takes a spreadable turn. We love to apply pure maple butter to fresh fruit slices and pancakes for a less messy stack. (Enjoy it straight from the spoon, too!)

This is the ultimate sweet meets savory lunch. If you’d like to jazz the sandwich up further, consider adding a tart cherry jam, fig preserves, ham, bacon, prosciutto, or fresh apple slices to the mix!

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 slices of bread
  • About 1 tablespoon maple butter
  • 2 slices sharp cheddar cheese
  • Mayonnaise
  • Butter, for greasing the pan

Variations

  • Cherry jam
  • Fig preserves, tart apple slices, and ham

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Smear maple butter onto two slices of bread. (We like to use a homemade, enriched maple bread!)
  2. Lay 2 slices of sharp cheddar cheese on one side and close the sandwich.
  3. Smear mayo on the outside pieces of each bread slice.
  4. Over medium-high heat, add a small piece of butter to a skillet, melting to just coat the bottom. Once heated, lay the grilled cheese in the center of the skillet, cover, and cook until toasted, about 3 minutes. Flip and cook for 3 minutes more until the other side is toasted and the cheese has melted.
  5. Remove from heat, transfer to a plate and slice in half.

NOTE: To add something extra to your grilled cheese, omit smearing one half of the bread with maple butter and use jam, preserves, or ham and apple slices instead.
