  • 3 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 3-4 cups grated sharp cheddar cheese, plus more for layering
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon maple pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon of paprika
  • 3/4 lbs elbow noodles
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs, about 2 slices of toasted Maple Bread*, pulsed in food processor
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • Salt, to taste

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Grease an 8×11-inch dish with butter.
  3. Bring a pot of water, salted with about a teaspoon of salt, to a boil.
  4. Meanwhile, begin making the sauce. In a pot over medium-high heat, melt the butter. Once melted, add the flour and stir together to make a roux. Cook for about a minute.
  5. Pour in the milk and maple syrup. Stir constantly to avoid boiling and scalding the milk. It should take about 10-12 minutes to get a thick, glistening consistency from the sauce.
  6. Stir in the cheese, onion powder, garlic powder, pepper, paprika, and salt to taste until the cheese has melted and the sauce is thick.
  7. Cook the pasta per box’s instructions. Drain the pasta water.
  8. In the dish, add a layer of noodles. Slather and toss in about half of the sauce. Cover with shredded cheese.
  9. Add the second half of noodles and repeat.
  10. In a small bowl, toss the maple breadcrumbs with the butter and a pinch of salt. Disperse over the top of the macaroni and cheese.
  11. Add the second half of noodles and repeat.
  12. In a small bowl, toss the maple breadcrumbs with the butter and a pinch of salt. Disperse over the top of the macaroni and cheese.
  13. Bake for 35-45 minutes until golden brown. Allow the dish to cool slightly before digging in!
