The taste of this Strawberry Chocolate Smoothie is less like a milkshake and more like a chocolate covered strawberry. Packed with frozen strawberries and dark cherries, there’s a fresh, fruity note that balances the decadence brought to the table with cocoa powder and pure maple butter.

If you were to ask us, we could easily add another tablespoon of pure maple butter (or a pour of maple syrup) to amplify the sweetness of this smoothie. But if you’d rather save dessert for long after dinner, and not have it for breakfast, 2 tablespoons of maple butter is more than enough. We chose to use maple butter in this smoothie instead of maple syrup for a creamier affect. If you’d like an even creamier texture, experiment with adding yogurt or a tablespoon of nut butter in addition to the listed ingredients.

The beauty of smoothies is they’re forgiving recipes. There is room to play with ratios. Is there a perfect way to build a smoothie? We’re sure. It depends on whether you prefer a thinner, sip-able smoothie or a thicker smoothie that can be scooped with a spoon.

This particular smoothie is in the middle of thin and creamy. We find the consistency to be juuust right. Enjoy sipping it through a straw or pour into a bowl and top it with your preferred granola for a breakfast bowl. Dare to drizzle a little more maple butter on top, or around the glass, for an extra touch of something sweet.

  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tbsp maple butter
  • 1 cup oat milk
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 cup frozen pitted dark cherries
  • 1 cup frozen strawberries
  • 1 tablespoon flaxseed meal (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons pepitas (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon


  1. Combine all of the ingredients in a blender. Blend for 60 seconds or until everything is blended together. Pour and serve in two glasses topped with your favorite granola.
