2018 Sugaring Season: It’s Official!

We have officially started sugaring in 2018! The crew started tapping the first full week in January and finished tapping last Friday, February 16th. The total number of taps this year is a little over 24,000. Monday was the first sap collection day. Up until this point, we had left the drain open on the tanks. The vacuum level at the sugarhouse is 22 inches, which is good for this early in the season. The goal is to have the vacuum at 26-27 inches.

Like every year, we need to refresh on the systems after a 9-month break. In addition to getting back into the routine of sugaring, there are the normal startup problems. This year it started with a motor going bad on one of the RO’s. Steve has picked up a new one and Cary will be working on installing it today.

By the end of the day, we made our first 2 drums for the 2018 season. The pictures below are of the sugarhouse releaser, new pump and sap in the tanks. Stay tuned for more updates!
