Maple Syrup Season 2016: A Sweet Surprise

The weather forecast may have been looking grim, but little did we know we were in for a sweet surprise this past weekend. Mother Nature came through and she was a generous mood! The sap ran long and hard, in a way that we have not seen in many years. The sap started to run on Saturday morning and throughout the afternoon. We had multiple mainlines running a full pipe, and even had to open up a second mechanical releaser just to keep up with the sap, which was running between 2200-2500 gallons an hour. By the end of the night, we had filled every tank we had with sap! We even had to start boiling 8% concentrate takes more oil to make a gallon of syrup and also reduces the syrup per hour down to 10-15 gallons, compared to 35-40 gallons we normally make. During this period of time, we made 14 drums, but still have many gallons of 8% sap that needs to be boiled. The weather looks good right now, so we should have a good week of sugaring ahead!
