Maple Syrup Season 2016: The Steam Keeps Rising

The sap started to run in the late afternoon on Saturday and slowed down during the night. On Sunday we went back to trying not to over flow the tanks and make sure we had enough storage, to keeping the RO processing raw sap and feeding the evaporator concentrate. The sap ran at over 2,000 gallons an hour and the electric releaser ran for 10 hours straight at 35 gallons a minute. Another great run! By Monday morning, we had filled drum 139 with an Amber Rich grade of pure Vermont maple syrup. We are currently filling drum 147 and have another 6-7 hours of boiling ahead of us. We lost power briefly this morning and the sap is not running. It is currently 30 degrees and snowing. Here are a few pictures of the farm this morning:

On a side note, friends of ours are welcoming an exchange student from Thailand to Vermont. They have been preparing the student for life in Vermont and the significance of maple syrup in our region. As the student was opening the refrigerator at her home in Thailand, a bottle caught her eye: our very own Butternut Mountain Farm maple syrup! The family had received the syrup as a gift. What a coincidence!
