Maple Syrup Season 2016: The Sap Is Flowing

As we said goodbye to February, the sap was running, but not enough to turn on the Reverse Osmosis (RO) or boil. In the past, the sap flows have showed at night, but never stopped. Each day we seemed to collect less sap. Thankfully Mother Nature must have overheard our discontent, because the sap has started to run much better! There were multiple mainlines that were running a full pipe on Tuesday, meaning the lines were completely full with raw sap. Prior to this, we had no vacuum, which may have been part of the reason the sap seemed less than plentiful. We have two vacuum pumps at our sugarhouse. We use one in the beginning of the year and then the other vacuum once we have the pipeline system free of most of the leaks. The sap continues to run around 1,000 gallons on hour. We ran one RO all night and now have both machines working. this morning there is 2,200 gallons of 7% concentrate, 15,000 gallons of 2% sap and 250 gallons of 16%. We have started to boil and have filled drum #20. And there is still plenty more sap to boil!
